The Universal Service Management Body of Knowledge (USMBOK™)

Introduction

A ‘Body of Knowledge’ or BOK is a repository of information containing the sum total of all documented expert knowledge of a profession. The development of a BOK is a significant stage in the maturity of a profession as it represents a broad consensus regarding the profession itself and the range of knowledge, skills, and methods that should be mastered by practitioners in the field.

A BOK defines the profession and the core competencies shared by the profession. It defines what we know and what we do with that knowledge.

The USMBOK codifies and defines service management as a system.

The Universal Service Management Body of Knowledge (USMBOK™) is derived from published literature and the accumulated experiences of practitioners in the service management profession. It continues to evolve as the profession evolves, through open dialog and representation.

The USMBOK is a ‘living’ reference for, and of the profession. It is available in two forms, via this web site as a summary, and in a much more detailed and comprehensive published form - the GUIDE to the USMBOK.

  • Promote the advancement, understanding, and recognition of the profession among those who interact with the service community;
  • Facilitate professional development for practitioners at any stage in their careers, as well as people who come from other backgrounds/disciplines;
  • Provide the basis for future curriculum development and support for professional development and any future certification schemes;
  • Promote integration and connections with related disciplines;

Elements

A Body of Knowledge designed to support the maturity of a profession requires the following minimum elements:

GUIDE
A publication that describes the core elements of the BOK that tend not to change, and acting as the basis for the Service Management Qualification Scheme.

Glossary
A comprehensive lexicon of all the terms, concepts and acronyms used within the GUIDE publication, containing summary explanations, and comparisons with third-party terms used elsewhere in the service management industry, with which they are synonymous.

Personal accreditation qualification scheme
A qualification scheme of credentials and 'certification's an individual can gain based upon commonly accepted roles and responsibilities within a service provider organization.

Standards compliant credentialing program
A credentialing program that is consistent and preferably compliant with the requirements of national, and international education standards. The program should be open to anyone and clearly delineate between credentials, providing a progressive path to the senior credential.

Professional Registry
An open enrollment online service where candidates, professionals and credential owners may record and securely maintain information on their career experience, education history, and professional development units (PDUs). The system should support a request for PDU review and allotment to allow eligibility for elements of the credential program.

References to supporting information sources
The BOK should provide a reference as an acknowledgement of any information used from a third-party source.

Transparent, open governance for growth
An easy to understand and transparent governance scheme to support both the maturity and growth of the BOK, and to oversee the scope and correctness of Qualification Scheme and credentialing program.

Dynamic method for maturity
A request management system capable of supporting questions and enquiries regarding the BOK, and a means by which persons can submit candidate extensions (additions) to the BOK for consideration by the Governance Council.

Governance

The following three organizational bodies are responsible for the Governance of the USMBOK, and credential program.

The Board of Directors

The appointed Board of Directors are both officers of the company and responsible for any Councils or Committees working under the auspices of the Board.

The USMBOK Governance Council (UGC)

The UGC consists of members appointed by the Board who have volunteered to serve and to offer advice and recommendations to the Board on the scope, content and positioning in the industry of the BOK.

The Qualification Scheme Governance Council (QSGC)

Consists of members appointed by the Board who have volunteered to serve and to offer advice and recommendations to the Board on credentialing requirements as they relate to the service management professional, the individual.

  • The service requirement lifecycle;
  • The service request lifecycle;
  • The service provision lifecycle;
  • The serviice operations lifecycle;
  • The service event lifecycle;

Extensions

An 'extension' is an approved additional relevant reference to the core USMBOK, approved for inclusion following a review and acceptance by the USMBOK Governance Council (UGC).

The Extension may be a publication, article, case study, web page, or other similar information. Extensions specific to one of the USMBOK knowledge domains or areas are included and referenced from that part of the web-based USMBOK.

Should you wish to submit information on a possible extension for consideration you may do so using the Service Support Service . Authors and publishers may use the same service to submit references for consideration but should also include a detailed 'Extension Application', mapping the relevance of the materials to USMBOK content.
