The Universal Service Management Body of Knowledge (USMBOK™)

Extensions

We are committed to seeking out the very best service management relevant guidance and maintaining an open but protective governance scheme that meets the needs of the service management professional community.

The purpose of the USMBOK is to put all of the service management relevant knowledge into context, and provide a single framework for service management professionals to understand and use, a 'rosetta stone', around which they could add work of their own, and other industry contributions.

The USMBOK Extensions program is now managed and operated by the Service Management Society.

The Service Management Society, Inc. ("SM-S") is a non-profit corporation organized to support individuals, groups and organizations interested or engaged in furthering the profession and discipline of Service Management.

Further information on the objectives of SM-S and how the USMBOK Extensions program operates under their stewardship is available from the SM-S website at http://www.sm-s.org.

For more information please contact SMS directly at: info@sm-s.org.

Definition

An 'extension' is an approved additional relevant reference to the core USMBOK, approved for inclusion following a review and acceptance.

Extensions specific to one of the USMBOK knowledge domains or areas are included and referenced from that part of the web-based USMBOK.

Types of Extensions

  • A book or publication with an ISBN or similar reference;
  • A website page or pages;
  • A white paper;
  • A personally penned article or report;
  • A periodical article or newsletter item;

Criteria

The key criteria for an USMBOK extension is that:

  • Permission has been obtained for it to be referenced in the form of a signed ‘release form’;
  • The item can be referenced ‘permanently’, or a copy retained at the USMBOK website;
  • It is relevant to the existing USMBOK topics, or service management in general and represents a new topic area currently missing from the USMBOK;
  • A person is available as the primary contact for questions on the subject matter of the extension;
A detailed mapping has been completed by the submitter (sponsor) as to how the extension is relevant to the USMBOK and specifically the GUIDE.

Request Procedure

Anyone, regardless of his or her corporate affiliation or level of experience, is able through the extension scheme, to develop, discover, or remind us all that there is additional, important and relevant information that is a candidate to be added to the USMBOK.

Using a simple process, the information may be submitted for review and consideration.  The only requirement is that the submitter has taken the time to carefully map the extension to the existing USMBOK topics, and has included a ‘position statement’ explaining why they feel it is relevant.

Please refer to the SM-S website for the current procedure.

Following review, observations and comments will be sent directly to the submitter.  Upon approval, the SM-S website will be updated with the position statement and direct references to the information source.

No intellectual capital or property rights will be transferred, nor required to be transferred at a future date and time.  All extensions remain the property of their creator.
